Drawing, Designing and Making with Mexican Smalti Lagou Raxi Hotel, Pelion, Greece

In this workshop participants will draw, investigate colour combinations and complete mosaics based on images of flowers.
Course Content:
Students will begin by making drawings of flowers and plants, both from the gardens surrounding the hotel and the printed flower image. These drawings will then be translated into mosaic. Mosaic theory will be introduced, including andamento and Roman design principles. Elements of design will be discussed including scale, colour, tonality and composition. The mosaics will be made from Mexican smalti, a luxury mosaic material which has unique colour changes and beautiful textures with each tiny piece of tesserae.
Students will make at least two mosaics art works, one in Mexican smalti, and a smaller practice piece in Winckelmans tiles. A double direct method of construction will be introduced.
